Musk's announcement of ... well, something ... is slated to take place today at the Tesla Motors design studio in Hawthorne, California in the US.
But what exactly Musk will say is shrouded in a veil of secrecy not seen since the late Steve Jobs ushered in innovation after innovation during the glory days of Apple.
To date, no one has cracked the code for a successful -- meaning cost-effective way -- to store large amounts of power for later distribution. But as he's done before, Musk appears to be betting that he holds the key to an all-new multi-billion industry.
On Tuesday he took to twitter with a cryptic bit of fun:
“For the future to be good, we need electric transport, solar power and (of course) ... the missing piece,” he wrote.
According to Navigant Research, if the rights things fall into place, grid-scale storage could be a $64 billion industry by the middle of the next decade.
