José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, has called for the completion of an internal market for energy. Speaking at his first ‘State of the Union’ speech in Strasbourg yesterday, he said “energy is a key driver for growth and a central priority for action”.

Nautricity Limited, the Glasgow-headquartered developer of innovative tidal energy technology, has announced that it has successfully completed its first investment funding round. In this multi-million pound deal, First Tech Ltd, an Aberdeen-based investment company which invests in technology and offshore engineering, has made a significant equity investment in the company.

This was one of the main points of the keynote speech made by Dr. Bertrand Piccard (Initiator and President of the Solar Impulse solar aircraft) on the opening day of the 25th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition and 5th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion (25th EU PVSEC / WCPEC-5). The event opened its doors yesterday in Valencia (Spain), 12 years after the World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion was last held in Europe.

According to EurObserv’ER estimates in its latest Biofuel Barometer, the slowdown in the growth of European biofuel consumption has deepened again. Biofuel use in transport grew by 18.7% between 2008 and 2009, against 30.3% between 2007 and 2008 and 41.8% between 2006 and 2007.
