Research conducted by scientists at the University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) has enabled a new solar heating system to be developed using nanotechnology which heats water to five times the temperature of a conventional system. Reportedly, the project has emerged from one of the enterprises of the URFJ’s business incubator.

The Lumenhaus design from a team from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University has been pronounced the most efficient at this year’s Solar Decathlon Europe Competition held in Madrid (Spain). Houses designed by the University of Applied Sciences Rosenheim and the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences came in second and third place, respectively.

The Turkish solar panel manufacturer, Solimpeks has completed installation of a hybrid solar collector system consisting of 54 Volther hybrid collectors, which produce electricity and hot water simultaneously for the Applewood children’s home on Chetwode Road, London (England).

EurObserv'ER, which measures the progress made by renewable energies in each sector and in each member State of the European Union in an as up-to-date way as possible, has release its latest baromter on solar thermal energy. It estimates that the installed collector surface area in European Union countries in 2009 was approximately 4.17 million square metres (equivalent to a thermal capacity of 2.9 GWth). This represents a market decline of 10% compared to 2008.

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) has released its 2009 US Solar Industry Year in Review, finding 2009 to be another year of strong growth despite the economic recession. A combination of policies, new business models, and declining prices drove expansion in 2009; and growth is expected to continue during 2010.
