energy saving

Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage moves to save energy and drive efficiency initiatives forward

Cuba had already made large waves earlier this year when President Fidel Castro linked biofuels to increases in crop prices and called on this unhealthy connection to be stopped. The country is still in what it called a Special Period , with the country looking to further develop and grow towards the future. Lage was addressing the Cuban Parliament and noted that since starting the so called “Energy Revolution” , Cuba today only consumes 34% of kerosene, 40% of Liquefied Gas, and 80% of the gasoline it did before initiating the program. Cuba’s energy worries have been partly absolved by Hugo Chavez who has come to the aid of Cuba bringing Venezuelan Crude to Cuba.

It was also said that power cuts would soon be reduced and that over $1.5 billion USD have been pumped into new power plants in addition to $250 million USD for transmission and distribution equipment. The country at current produces 2,200 MW of electricity.

Vice President Carlos Lage was quoted as saying; “As we save more energy and become more economically efficient, the country will be able to advance towards development and we will improve the quality of life of our people.”
