German government sets high goals for already successful energy savings program

The German government has in 2006 subsidized via its Building-improvement-program the renovation of over 265,000 homes and apartments in order to make them more energy efficient. This has been achieved by giving low costs credits and amortization benefits. The transportation, construction, and city development minister Wolfgang Tiefensee presented the results of this initiative on Tuesday in Berlin.

In total the government invested over 5,6 billion Euros into the program and estimates that yearly 900,000 tons of C02 emissions will be eliminated as a result of this. Since the beginning of this year the state backed Kfw Bank has been giving low interest rate credits in addition to giving money for renovations to boast energy efficiency. Improves such as new insulation, modern heating systems or new windows could be purchased with this money. The savings for an average size apartment of 83 square meters could amount to 500 euros yearly.

It was also pointed out that in Germany 20 percent of CO2 emissions come from residential buildings, whereas cars are responsible for 12 percent of emissions. The investments are also creating an increase in demand for construction; Tiefensee estimates that 25,000 jobs are created for every 1 billion Euros of investment.  The goal of the program will be to save at least 40 billion Euros of heating costs by 2020.
