Cell phones pose a curious challenge in terms of energy efficiency as their in use and idle times are largely optimized and represent only one third of total energy consumption. Two thirds of energy consumption are used when the charger is unplugged put still drawing power from the mains, this is represents a chargers so called no load energy consumption. Nokia chargers have a no load energy consumption of 300 mW with the best Nokia chargers drawing 150 mW. In 2007 Nokia aims to bring out chargers which remind consumers to unplug the chargers and further Nokia hopes to bring down the mW figure by 50% till 2010. The best in class of these it is then hoped will consume close to 0.
The American Environmental Protection Agency last year awarded the company its Energy Star rating for its newest devices. Nokia says that these alerts could once fully implemented save enough electricity to power 85,000 homes. Considering the shorter and shorter lifecycle of cell phones today this could be one of the quickest programs to save energy through replacement of outdated devices. Nokia new modular Flexi WCDMA base stations are also another step forward using 60% less power then the traditional equipment.
