The Untied States Department of Energy has achieved its goal of 200 energy savings assessments for 2006. These assessments have resulted in savings of 52 billion Btu of natural gas per year which is equal to the annual natural gas consumed by 725,000 residential homes or $485 million USD per year. It could also be seen as taking the emissions of 648,000
The Department of Energy will conduct an additional 250 assessments this year. While the selected plants and companies in 2006 were the 200 most energy intensive facilities in the United States, in 2007 applicants can visit the http://www.eere.energy.gov/industry/saveenergynow and apply via the internet to be selected to have a team of experts come and work on saving natural gas energy at their facility.
The savings generated for each facility as a result of the assessment were between 5 and 15% of total natural gas usage, yielding an average of $2.5 million USD in savings. For those who may not get selected there is however a large online data base of tips and guides to help become more energy efficient at the below listed web site.
