Hedcor Inc. announces two hydroelectric power plant projects in the Philippines

Hedcor Inc. which is a subsidiary of Aboitiz Equity Ventures has announced that it will undertake two projects in the Mindanao region of the Philippines to supply power to a region suffering acute power shortages. The two plants in Sibulan and Tamugan will cost 5 billion pesos a piece and supply 42.5 mW and 30.5 mW respectively.

The plants will be built by Hedcor. Inc, with completion slated for the Sibulan hydropower plant in August 2009. The Tamugan dam will be commence construction by 2008 and should be operating by 2010.  Construction of this plant is set to start before the end of the month. The power plants will not need to dam the rivers but instead use run-of-river for the generation of power. New roads will also have to be constructed in the area and existing ones improved in order to make the site more accessible.

It is estimated that 42,000 tons of C02 will be saved annually with the construction of these dams versus a more traditional solution; in addition the plants were constructed and planned with a keen eye towards preserving the existing environment.  One of the rivers on which a plant will be built is popular as a tourist attraction and white water rafting. The company also focused on making the dams economically sustainable by choosing to not take the property tax exemption, thereby allowing the local governments to profit from the company’s presence. In addition locals will be given preferential status when being hired and education, health, and community projects will be supported by the company.

Hedcor is the second largest producer of hydroelectricity in the Philippines. Hedcor Inc states it’s purpose as “to develop and operate efficient hydropower systems and its vision is to lead in the promotion and development of clean energy.” At present it manages 19 hydroplants with a total capacity of 113 mW including 13 small scale hydroplants.
