Honda is set to show a revised version of its FCX concept vehicle at the International Motor Show in Melbourne, Australia. The new revised version improves on an already impressive product. The previous FCX which was a four person hydrogen car was driven by a Californian family and utilitzed a fuel cell system which converted hydrogen into electricty.
The battery in the FCX is a high-efficiency lithium ion battery. The car is one of several on the market for testing. Another noteable car is BMW´s hydrogen powered 7 series. This larger sedan is more of a hybrid though with the addition of a petrol powered engine, due to the limited range of the hydrogen powered one.
The new FCX will be 60 percent more efficent then a petrol vehicle and twice what a hybrid vehicle. The efficiencies have been achieved by increasing the output of the fuel cell by 14 kw, all the while making it 30 % lighter and 20% smaller. This has allowed the designers to make a roomier and nicer interior room. As a result of this and other strides the power plant was reduced 40% by volume and 180kg by weight. Therefore leading to an increase in range , which is claimed to be up to 570 km, with a top speed of 160 km.
