Rwanda looks for Mutobo hydro power plant to be completed for Sept.
The hydro plant is a small scale hydro power plant being constructed by a Sri Lankan company called Enco. The plant will supply 200 kW , with the aim to increase electrification in the Musanze Area. The project has been funded by both the Ministry of Energy and United Nations Industrial Development Organization. The costs have been estimated at $400,000.
Australian drought impacts electricity prices
The electric utility Hydro Tasmania has warned that the drought has caused hydroelectricity storage lakes to fall below 25% of capacity. This has meant that Hydro Tasmania has been unable to meet local needs and had to import power from Victoria from natural gas. The $70 million ASD shortfall has seriously impacted the bottom line and Hydro Tasmania is no longer able to absorb these costs and will now have to pass these on to business and consumers.
British Columbia looking towards new energy options to achieve targets
The province of British Columbia in Canada is looking to wood, wind, and water to meet its ambitious emissions targets. The aims of B.C. are for all new power projects to be emissions neutral and by 2016 to no longer import electricity. With the new plan hydro power has become markedly more attractive and there are considerations to restart discussions concerning a long-planned third dam on the Peace River. BC Hydro will also make another attempt to purchase power from Alcan’s dam on the Nechako River.
