The power plant will become part of the Olkaria geothermal power station and is slated to go on-tream by the end of 2009. This will be the sixth geothermal power plant which MHI will supply to KenGen. Three previous units being for 15 MW each and a further two for 35 MW each, these came online respectively in the 1980s and 2003. MHI has already carried out projects in wind, hydro, solar, and other power sources. Further to this is has installed geothermal projects in 14 countries, including worldwide leaders such as Iceland and the United States. These projects total 3,000 MW.
Kenya at current gets 75% of its power from hydropower, but due to flucations in weather and thereby in the amount of power that is available has switched to building more geothermal power projects. MHI also plans to continue to spearhead and drive projects in the geothermal sector.
