Scotland to get the world’s largest wave farm

Orkney in Scotland will become the site of the world’s largest wave farm. The project will see a Pelamis device being deployed. Scottish Power is involved with the project along with Ocean Power Delivery, the creators of the device. There are plans for up to four more devices to be deployed at the site.

A funding deal from the Scottish government will also see 13 million pounds go to the project overall. According to Nicol Stephen Deputy First Minister “Scotland has the potential to generate a quarter of Europe's marine energy “ The device saw implementation last year in Portugal and was planned to generate power for up to 1,500 households. In Scotland plans are for power generation to supply 2,000 households.

The four 160 meter Sea Snakes from Ocean Power Delivery are a significant step in wave power projects and many in Scotland see this as a clear sign that the Scottish government is looking to expand the role of clean energy in Scotland for the future.

Some such as Friends of the Earth Scotland's chief executive, Duncan McLaren have citied the great potential of this technology: "Wave and tidal power could supply a fifth of UK's electricity needs and Scotland is ideally placed to generate significant amounts of this pollution-free energy.
