Wave Hub Project in Southern England runs into controversy

The Wave Hub project which is to be based off of Cornwall has run into controversy with a group of locals who are not known for singling out environmental issues; surfers. The project which will be an array of wave power generation devices will decrease at most in the worst affected areas wave height by 11 percent.

Some of the local surfers have likened this to a golf course having to close some holes due to a wind park. The project which is an experimental installation being built by local authorities and power companies to gain a further understanding of wave power may eventually have a up to four wave power generators connected to the sea bed.

The location for the connection to the main power grid and the wave farm itself will be about 10 miles offshore. It is expected that the Wave Hub could be commissioned by 2008 if all goes according to plan.   Wave power continues to find a great home in Great Britain which as an island nation looking to get to 20 percent renewable energy by 2020 is turning to wave power as an alternative for more traditional forms of renewable energy. Early estimates have pegged the value of the wave power energy market in the Untied Kingdom at $400 million USD by 2020.

The site which is about 10 miles off the coast of Hayle has been chosen with a variety of factors in mind , including shipping lands, water depth, Ministry of Defense considerations, and fishing industry needs. There will also be a safety zone of 4 by 2 kilometers to ensure that the project is not damaged. It is also expected that the project could be bring 100 jobs to the region and help meet regional emission targets.
