American Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney on Energy

In the last of our series we look at Mitt Romney a republican candidate running with strong business experience on his record. Mr Romney who was formally the Governor on Massachusetts has long been in business and understands the running of the economy as such the best of most candidates. Although he acknowledges many of the current problems with Americas current energy policy , the steps which he would like to take are far from acceptable for most. While he supports higher emission standards he wants to keep them loose and support Americas fledgling car industry. His father was a former executive at American Motors and Romney has always had a place in his heart for Michigan , so it should come as little surprise then, that he is probably unwilling to do all too much to upset Detroit.

He thinks the biofuels are good, but does not see them as the answer. In particular he has gone on the record as saying;"We're using too much oil,"We have an answer. We can use alternative sources of energy -- biodiesel, ethanol, nuclear power -- and we can drill for more oil here. We can be more energy independent and we can be far more efficient in the use of that energy." In fact most of Romney's energy policy is driven by oil independence.

In particular he favors a price floor for fuel made from so called “clean coal”. He also would like to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve. Further to this Mr Romney also supports putting money into research for new renewable technologies, however since he is also keen to cut taxes, it seems unlikely that these funds would be anything on par with that of democratic candidates , in particular considering that he is not willing to name a sum.
