Germany looks to expand on lead in renewable energy market

A recent report in the German media has put the value of the German renewable energy product exports at a figure of $7.9 billion or 6 billion euros for 2006. This comes at a time when the relative price of German products is high worldwide as a strong Euro makes exports more expensive.

Only five years ago exports of Germany’s renewable energy industry were worth a mere 500 million euros. Future growth is expected to be about 10 percent per annum. The centers of the industry are the south west and places such as Hamburg. Leading manufactures of solar , wind, and bio fuel products are located throughout these areas.

This lead is however under threat from the United States, where Silicon Valley has become a new hotbed of environmental technology. The German Environmental minister, Sigmar Gabriel of the Social Democrat Party has recognized this and was quoted as saying Europe must make a great effort not to be left behind.” Renewable energy also offers great chances for Germany to cut down on unemployment in the future, currently 170,000 are employed in this industry with some projected nearly 500,000 to be employed by 2010.
