Iberdrola will have more than 10,000 MW in renewables by 2011

Some time before becoming Iberdrola's President, Mr Ignacio Galán, current VicePresident and CEO, has announced a new "renewable" goal, at 10,000 MW of capacity owned by 2011. For Mr Ignacio Galán “this type of energy is crucial to reduce Spain's foreign dependency and greenhouse emissions”. Until now, the Spanish utility had aimed to have 6,200 MW by 2008. No doubt, the new wind power will be a key factor in absolut terms, not only for Spain but also for the whole world, where Iberdrola remains leader as the world's largest wind power operator. This figure is greater than the capacity installed in any European country, with the exception of Germany.

Although Iberdrola's approach has been, to date, to focus in Spain, "during the 2007-2011 period this technology will be strenghened both in our country and abroad, and other technologies such as the solar energy will be promoted”, recently stated Iberdrola in a press release. “The goal of these initiatives is to reinforce Iberdrola's world leadership in the renewable energy industry”, they added.

“The company, which has been able to meet the goals included in its 2002-2006 strategic plan, had 3,810 MW of capacity by the end of 2005”, according to Iberdrola sources. In this way, the utility has increased 7.5 fold its capacity throughout the period. Besides, the company's portfolios include as much as 15,000 MW in projects being developed.
