ScottishPower Renewables Unveils Plans For UK's First Onshore Renewable Energy Visitor Centre

The wind farm with 140 turbines and 322 MW will be the location for this centre, which will open it's doors in summer of 2009. Visitors young and old alike will be able to learn about renewable energy from specially trained tutors. This centre will be the first of its kind in the United Kingdom. Tourists and the general public alike have shown great interest in wind power, with 4500 visitors coming to the wind farm at Black Law for an open day in 2006. There are more of these types of open days planned as well.

Simon Christian, Project Director at ScottishPower Renewables said: “As Europe's largest onshore wind farm, Whitelee represents a great step forward for the UK in tackling climate change, and is crucial to meeting the Government's targets for green energy. The project is a huge engineering achievement and will be an impressive sight to behold when completed.

“As well as offering spectacular views of the site, the visitor centre will be an educational facility, where people young and old can learn about renewable energy and the processes involved in harnessing energy from wind. We hope that the centre will be a popular attraction for both tourists and people from the surrounding areas who want to learn more about the way that wind farms operate.”

The wind farm on which construction was started in 2006 will be completed in 2009.
