Towards sustainable consumption and production in European manufacturing

Registration is now open for the Sustainable Manufacturing Summit Europe that takes place November 19-20 in Brussels.

The event comes in the wake of the July announcement by the European Commission on the Action Plans for Sustainable Consumption and Production and Sustainable Industrial Policy (SCP/SIP).

Anders Wijkman, Member or the European Parliament will open the Summit by addressing the critical question of how businesses can adopt innovative strategies for sustainable growth and Herbert Aichinger, Head of Unit, Sustainable Production and Consumption, Environment DG, European Commission will be the first of a number of Commission speakers giving detail on the potential impact of the above Action Plans.

Representatives from Hewlett Packard, BASF, Toyota Motor Europe, Cisco Systems, Unilever, Coca-Cola, European Water Partners, Hydro Aluminium, Volvo Trucks and Canon Europe will benchmark their sustainability efforts through practical case studies and provide reaction to the Commission's plans.

The event also includes entrance to the 2008 EMAS Awards (Eco-Management and Auditing Scheme) and a specially convened evening reception organised by the Commission involving Europe's senior sustainability civil servants to which all delegates are invited.

This event will cover carbon reduction at every stage of the manufacturing process:

-       Innovative environmental strategy and management

-       Manufacturer renewable energy strategies, energy efficiency and water management

-       Product life cycle analysis

-       Product eco and energy labeling

-       Manufacturing design for "reduce, reuse, recycle"

-       The possibilities of industrial symbiosis
