HelioVolt sets new CIGS solar efficiency benchmark

 

HelioVolt has reached 12.2 percent efficiency with its CIGS solar cells. The US National Renewable Energy Laboratories (NREL) attained 19.9 percent in experimental cells earlier this year.

The result is being presented at the IEEE Photovoltaics Specialists Conference this week. The most important issue, however, is the fact that HelioVolt's new production produce can produce cells in six minutes.

The new cells will be delivered towards the end of 2008 or beginning of 2009. The commercial cells will have an average efficiency between 10 and 12 percent.

CIGS cells are a serious competitor to more expensive silicon cells. However the biggest constraint for this technology is finance; banks are still a bit hesitant to provide it for new solar technologies, as cells are expected to last for several decades.

What technology will win this battle? The answer, in the coming years.
