The regional Governor of Castilla La Mancha, Mr José María Barreda, and Iberdrola and Iberdrola Renovables' President, Mr Ignacio Galán, visited last week the construction works of the solar electric thermal plant that the company is currently building in Puertollano (Ciudad Real).
The Puertollano facility, which is expected to enter into operation by the end of 2008 willl have an installed capacity of 50 MW, after an investment of 185 m euros. The plant's stakeholders are Iberdrola Renovables (90%) and Spain's Institute of Renewable Energy and Energy Diversification (IDAE, Instituto para la Diversificación y Ahorro de la Energía) (10%).
The estimated annual production of the plant is 115 million kWh, or enough to power a city of 50,000 people and prevent the emission of 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
The facility will sit on 135 hectares and will boast an impressive 290,000 square metres of solar area, with 352 collectors and 120,000 heliostats and 13,000 pipes.
The company is also working on another similar plant in Teruel (Spain), which is part of the company's plan to develop 150 MW of this technology during the coming years. In total, Iberdrola expects to build around 2,000 MW per year between 2008 and 2010 in order to reach its target of 13,600 MW by then.
