Kyocera to triple its solar production capacity

Kyocera has announced that it will increase its production capacity to 500 MW in order to keep up with demand. The Japanese company will invest some $250 m in an expansion plant which will be completed by 2011.

Kyocera will expand its production plant in Yakkaichi, Japan, with $165 m. In this factory, the company makes raw solar cells that are later sent to other manufacturing plants where they are transformed into finished solar modules.

The Japanese firm, which is currently the world's third largest cell producer after Sharp and Q-Cells, follows thus its competitors in capacity expansion plans. Kyocera increased its sales last year by 33%, according to company representatives.

With a few announcements of new silicon production plants and less silicon-intensive production techniques, the solar market seems to have put an end to the constraints in supply that it has been facing in the last years. Even though silicon will likely remain the main ingredient of solar cells in the coming years, the industry is definitely diversifying the materials used, with recent developments showing very promising alternatives.
