The firm, based in Santa Clara, claims to have invented a black liquid that will revolutionize the solar industry. It was developed using nanotechnology methods thanks to its group of experienced staff, with very diverse backgrounds. The Californian company uses silicon nanoparticles to make the solar ink; in the end, this ink creates something similar to today's solar panels, but it does so faster and cheaper, according to Mr Conrad Burke, CEO of Innovalight
The company has recently raised $28 m (from Convexa Capital, a Norwegian firm) for the development of solar products. It also plans to open a manufacturing plant in Sunnyvale in 2008.
Mr Burke defines their discovery as "a new frontier of silicon". Innovalight's solar modules will be available for sale in 2009. In the long term, the company expects the modules to cost below 50 dollar cents per watt, or close to one tenth of the current price.
