United Arab Emirates offers huge potential for solar power

The UAE is currently experiencing an unprecedented amount of economic growth and developments in infrastructure. The UAE with its large tracts of desert land, plentiful sunshine, and ability to deliver huge investment projects in a short period could prove to be an ideal environment for bringing large scale solar power to the Emirates.

As the Emirates, especially Dubai and Abu Dhabi continue to grow by double digit rates in nearly every way, there is a huge hunger for power. Most of this is currently generated using oil and gas, which are of course plentiful in region. With a growing population and the need to especially guarantee plentiful supplies of water using water desalination plants alternatives could soon become very attractive.

 

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai recently outlined his Strategic Plan for 2015, incorporated into this was talks of sustaining Dubai's environment, ensuring that it is safe and clean. The level of solar radiation is even higher then Sahara and there are large areas of unused cheap land. Add to the mix the fact that a construction boom is underway and you have an ideal environment for solar power. Many leading European companies are already finding the UAE a great place to do business; this could be yet another industry which could soon take hold.
