According to Fang Junshi, a director with the National Energy Agency's coal department, talking at an energy conference held in Beijing, this revised objective will require growth of at least 20%. However, the wind sector is predicted to grow at an even higher rate throughout 2009, with an estimated 8,000 MW of new installed capacity. Accumulated wind power capacity is therefore expected to rise from 12 GW at the end of 2008 to 20 GW by 2009 year end.
China’s national economic rescue package of Yen 400,000 million includes funding to help achieve this new target for the wind sector and also includes plans to construct 24 new nuclear power plants to boost the nation’s nuclear capacity to 60 GW, some 20 GW above the previous target.
The leading wind turbine manufacturers operating in China are Gamesa (Spain) with an integrated production centre in Tianjin, which the company states, concentrates “manufacturing and assembly of the main wind turbine components” (multipliers, blades, generators and nacelles); Vestas (Denmark), Siemens and Nordex (Germany), Suzlon (India), and around 10 local manufacturers led by Goldwind.
