Germans and Italians take up positions in Bulgaria

The Bulgarian wind power market, which currently has a capacity of approximately 300 MW but hopes to reach 3,000 MW by 2020, continues to become increasingly attractive to foreign companies. In recent weeks for example, the German wind developer-operator, PNE Wind, signed an agreement with the local developer, Windpark Dobrudzha, to jointly develop 150 MW of wind power, while the Italian electric utility, Italgas, acquired 49% of a an 18-MW wind farm.

The agreement between PNE and Windpark Dobrudzha includes a 150 MW project located in the region of Dobrudzha. According to PNE, the project will obtain the final permits "in the near future". Currently, authorities are carrying out an analysis of the environmental impact studies on the project. Within the joint venture, PNE Wind will be responsible for the procurement of wind turbines, project finance, and managing the plant’s operations.

The agreement takes the total capacity of the Bulgarian projects in which PNE has a stake to 400 MW. This figure is part of a global portfolio of 2,450 MW which also includes Germany, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, the UK, the USA and Canada. To date, PNE has completed 782 MW across all the countries in which it operates, notably Germany, where it has an additional portfolio of 750 MW, not including its stake in various offshore projects.

Meanwhile, the stake acquired by Italgas in the 18-MW project was sold by the German technologist, Leitwind, the direct-drive wind turbines (without multiplier) of which have been installed on the two wind farms making up this complex. A total of twelve Leitwind machines each with a nameplate capacity of 1.5 MW have been installed. Leitwind will also hold the remaining 51% stake in the specific development company, Gardawind.
