Just one windpark seems to be enough to power 25% of Scottish homes. With 200 turbines, the new project, to be built near Vidlin in Shetland Mainland, will be a venture launched by SSE and the Shetland Islands Council, represented by Viking Energy.
Thanks to this preject, a sea-bed laying cable will be built between Sctoland and the Shetland Islands, once the permission from the Island residents is granted. This will be done by means of a public consultation exercise next February. Given that the project will leave in the islands around 20 m pounds (slightly more than 30 m euros) per year, residents are expected to say yes.
This wind power facility will be world class “in terms of scale, the richness of the natural resources being harnessed and the involvement of the local community” said SSE Chairman, Sir Robert Smith. Not difficult, as the islands are known to be one of the windiest places on the earth (the turbines are expected to be running at full speed around 50% of the time).
