Japan hopes to generate 0.2% of power from wind in 3 years

Japan is looking to redouble its efforts to bring renewable energy technologies into play on the domestic front, especially offshore wind power.

Japan has long been home to lots of technology in the fields of industrial engineering as well as electronics. Now the country which has been behind the United States and Europe in renewable energy make look to start to catch up. A big incentive for this is that the country is still very far behind on its Kyoto protocol goals. There is a law in force that Japan must generate 1.35% of power from renewable. This however is almost nothing compared to the 3.3 % share that alone wind power generates in Europe.

Mitsutoshi Yamashita, a Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry official was quoted as saying; "It's worthwhile entering the sector now as offshore technology is at the cutting-edge,".

The country is especially looking towards offshore power on the pacific ocean, to take advantage of the much higher winds. While in Europe costs are traditionally 50 to 100 higher for offshore compared to onshore, in Japan these are expected to be much higher as the sea surrounding Japan is much deeper. None the less the Japanese remain fairly confident that they will meet the challenge at hand.
