Repower's 5 MW wind turbine is one of the largest and most powerful in the market, is looking to make a splash offshore.
The company admits that Denmark and the Netherlands have been leaders in this field. But now that Germany has settled the laws on connection to the electrical grid and who will bear the costs, the race is on to build the first offshore fields. The first in Germany will be near the island of Borkum and will see 5Ms installed there. The production will take place starting this year and it is hoped that in 2008 the offshore park will be implemented. Thus far a test wind mill model of the 5M has been operating near Brunsbuettel with an availability of over 95% since 2004.
The company also recently signed another deal for 18 of these turbines to be used in another German wind park offshore. The turbine was designed to be operated both on or offshore.
