The plant, located in the municipality of La Calahorra, Granada, will have a total treatment capacity of approximately 100,000 tons per year, mainly from livestock and olive groves.
The capacity will allow the production of 58 GWh per year of energy in biomethane, thus contributing to the reduction of 23,000 tons of CO2 per year, the equivalent of the emissions of 6,500 cars circulating annually in Spain. In addition the plant will generate digestate that acts as a fertilizer and will benefit local agriculture.
This project will not only provide environmental and economic benefits, but will also help by diversifying the economy and creating direct and indirect employment, said the company. The plant will collaborate with 44 farming families and several agro-food companies in the area. To this will be added the more than 50 people who will be directly employed in its construction.
"With the beginning of the construction of the calahorra, we tangibly begin our strategic plan, which includes a portfolio of more than 30 projects in Spain and Portugal with the main focus on Andalusia. In the coming months we hope to begin the construction of at least two more plants in Andalusia," said David Pinero, general director of AGR Biogas.
