BMCS is an independent certification scheme (ICS) run by Green Gas Trading Limited (GGT), a private limited company that has been established to provide both a credible process for certifying biomethane and a trading platform to facilitate the trading of certificates. The scheme is a disruptor-innovator that offers transparent trading of biomethane at open market prices. GGT was established by members of the Anaerobic Digestion & Bioresources Association (ADBA), ADBA itself and environmental investors to support the growth of the AD industry.
The biomethane certificates issued under BMCS can be traded separately from the physical commodity gas. This allows the certificate owner to transact the physical commodity at the market price for that product whilst seeking the highest economic value for the Biomethane Certificate (BMC). Trading the gas and the certificates separately makes it possible to maximise the value of this exceedingly low carbon, green gas at a market determined price.
“Ecotricity has been at the forefront of supplying green gas to customers, and as such we have chosen to use the Biomethane Certification Scheme to ensure we do this in a fair, ethical and responsible way” said Ben Gatley, Head of Trading at Ecotricity. “Our ambition with this scheme is to keep on providing increasing levels of green gas to our customers over the coming months and years.”
Grant Ashton, CEO of Green Gas Trading, added that the BMCS methodology certificates the embedded carbon in the biomethane production process and is key to the acceptance of biomethane certificates as an offset for carbon reporting purposes. The fact that a leading green energy supplier like Ecotricity recognises this is an important vote of confidence in the scheme and validates the extensive work that has gone into its design and implementation.
Ecotricity has joined M&S, Future Biogas, Tamar Energy and many other AD operators as a shareholder in Green Gas Trading (GGT), following significant due diligence to test the robustness of the systems and processes behind GGT’s Biomethane Certification Scheme. GGT was established with the backing of the Anaerobic Digestion & Bioenergy Association (ADBA) in order to support AD developers as tariffs degress.
