Gasum and Scania Collaborate on Biogas Filling Station

On May 27, the landscape of the transport industry took a turn towards a sustainable future with the inauguration of a biogas filling station in Södertälje. The event was met with positive responses from attendees, which included industry stakeholders and political decision-makers. This represents a clear indication of the wide acknowledgment of the importance of transitioning towards greener fuels in transport.

The station, operating as a beacon of sustainable transport, emerged from the partnership between Gasum and Scania. Located near the Södertälje Syd junction, and adjacent to Scania’s production plant, the station marks an engagement in the shared focus on sustainable solutions and secure energy supply for one of Sweden's most active logistic hubs.

"In order to reach our urgent climate targets, we need to halve emissions every decade. Biomethane is an important part of Scania's broad sustainability offering, providing cost-efficient emission cuts, as well as several circular benefits and increased energy resilience. The Nordics have pioneered biomethane in transport. Together with our partners we can offer complete waste-to-vehicle solutions”, says Christian Levin, CEO of Scania and Traton.

The pressing need to meet future climate regulations was a central theme during the inauguration. There was a heavy emphasis on the role of biogas in attaining Sweden's ambitious emission reduction targets for the transport sector, and how biogas could serve as a tool in the transition towards a circular economy. In order to stay aligned with Sweden's ambitious roadmap of achieving a 70% reduction in transport emissions by 2030, using 2010 as the baseline, it's imperative for us to leverage innovative and sustainable solutions like biogas.

The Södertälje station, replacing older stations in Järna and Älvsjö, will provide greater capacity and reduced refueling time. The unique design boasts of two compressed gas dispensers and two liquefied gas dispensers, catering to both heavy-duty transport and smaller vehicles, thereby supporting an inclusive green transport system.

”This partnership with Scania is important as they are providing land for this project and continue to develop gas-powered trucks. It enables us to continue to expand and secure energy supply for sustainable solutions. This new station caters for not only the local transport and logistic needs, but national and international transports as well," says Sharareh Edström, Head of Business Traffic Sweden at Gasum.
