Center officials said they will now make the technology, called the "Stalk Stoker," to farmers and entrepreneurs the world over. The stoker turns "woody" plant materials into synthesized gas that can be used to fuel generators.
The technology can also be used to produce liquid biofuel.
Waste materials that have been tested for use in the technology include clean wood waste from furniture factories or saw mills, food waste, cardboard packaging materials and landscape trimmings.
