The EV, which the Munich-based luxury-car maker will begin selling in Germany in November, will cost €34.950 ($46,000). Buyers in the US will also have to pay a $925 transport fee for the car.
The company said the body of the i3 will be made from carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, which will sit atop a chassis made of aluminum.
According to BMW, the i3 is capable of 170BHP and is said to have a range between 80 and 100 miles from a single charge.
