Dyson, made famous by its vacuum cleaners, will invest $1.34 billion to develop the car plus an equal amount to engineer the solid state battery to power it.
While lithium-ion batteries are popular with most electric car manufacturers, Dyson plans to use solid-state batteries, which he says are smaller, more efficient, easier to charge and to recycle.
In an announcement to his employees and shared on Twitter, Dyson stated, “Dyson has begun work on a battery electric vehicle due to be launched by 2020.
“The project will grow quickly from here but at this stage we will not release any information.”
Over 400 Dyson engineers and other “talented individuals” are currently working on the project. That number is expected to grow as Dyson is “recruiting aggressively.”
