European smart energy company, gridX, has partnered up with the operator of one of the largest networks of independent EV charging stations in Europe and North America, ChargePoint. The partnership was concluded at the end of 2022 after a successful pilot phase in the UK and Germany. In the first year of the partnership, ChargePoint will integrate gridX technology into its software solution to make meter and system data digitally accessible, and to provide further control of charging processes.
ChargePoint will use gridX’s gridBox and the XENON platform to read out meter data from customers' grid connection points in real time. This data is then transferred to ChargePoint's own backend to dynamically set the resulting power the chargers can consume below a power ceiling. With this use of dynamic load management, ChargePoint can dynamically adjust charging flows in response to the location’s real-time building load to avoid grid overloads, while also making full use of the available capacity for charging.
Through this maximisation of power usage without breaching grid limits, more charging stations can be installed and operated at a single location with limited site power capacity. With this partnership, ChargePoint will be able to offer even better service to customers: there is no need for time-consuming and costly grid expansions, as the existing capacity can be optimally used in response to flexible loads.
XENON’s modular set-up provides maximum flexibility to develop a tailor-made energy management system according to country-specific requirements, offering additional modules at any time, for example to enable dynamic tariffs or peak shaving.
“By offering a range of modules on our XENON platform, we enable customers to rapidly get customised solutions to market and scale them with low development effort” said Tim Steinmetz, Managing Director and Chief Growth Officer at gridX. “Our solution is ideal for partners with big growth ambitions – making XENON a perfect match for ChargePoint’s requirements. We are looking forward to the upcoming scaling phase with ChargePoint and to advancing the e-mobility revolution together.”
Dynamic load management allows for the installation and operation of more charging stations at a given location, as all loads are considered and the available capacity is constantly used to its maximum. Unused capacity, as previously seen with static load management, are now a thing of the past.
