A spokesperson for Japan's second largest car manufacturer has told the Nikkei that the company was in the process of developing an electric car, although it had not decided when to launch it.
The company could also not comment on the Nikkei business daily's report, without sources, that a prototype of the car would be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in October.
According to the Nikkei, Honda plans to develop a vehicle around the size of a mini, joining other companies such as Toyota and Volkswagen that have also announced plans to launch electric cars in the next few years.
Meanwhile, Nissan, Japan's third biggest car manufacturer, unveiled its electric car "Leaf" earlier this month, which it plans to begin selling it in the US, Japan and Europe toward the end of 2010. Nevertheless, Honda believes it could take decades for electric vehicles to become commonplace due to their high cost, limited driving range and long charging times with the current battery technology.
