The agreement with Mitsubishi, which can currently be extended annually, establishes a framework for collaboration which includes the recommendation of each party's current products and services in the field of e-mobility.
Thus, Iberdrola will encourage its customers to choose Mitsubishi vehicles, while the carmaker will recommend the Iberdrola Green Mobility initiative, a comprehensive commercial package encompassing the electric vehicle, the installation of recharging stations, financing and the provision of a 100% renewable energy supply.
Under the terms of the agreement, Mitsubishi and Iberdrola will also explore opportunities to jointly exploit the commercial opportunities that may arise from their respective customer portfolios and will periodically organise technological exchange meetings where they will discuss the technical requirements of the carmaker's electric vehicles and Iberdrola’s recharging stations to ensure full compatibility.
The two companies have also undertaken to give first consideration to their respective products and services. Iberdrola, for example, will prioritise the acquisition of Mitsubishi electric vehicles for its fleet while Mitsubishi will consider Iberdrola’s energy supply services and recharging solutions before those of other companies for its Spanish network of dealerships and offices.
“This partnership agreement underscores not only the commitment of Iberdrola and Mitsubishi to sustainable development but also their desire to continue contributing to the creation of value in the industrial and services sectors, which is already reflected in their respective business projects,” said Iberdrola in a press statement.
MMC Automóviles España is the official importer of Mitsubishi Motors vehicles in Spain. Mitsubishi’s commitment to the environment is founded on its 100% zero-emissions electric vehicle, the i-MiEV or Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle. The high-tech i-MiEV has received numerous accolades for its many innovations and its outstanding contribution to efficient and sustainable mobility. Its Operating System, which forms the heart of the electric workings and is Mitsubishi Motors’ outstanding feature, is particularly noted.
Smart internet grid for the future
In a separate development, Iberdrola has also teamed up with major players from the energy and ICT sectors as well as R&D centres and universities from Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain “to identify the ICT requirements of smart energy systems, develop trail-blazing architecture and help standardise the solution adopted to ensure a widespread roll-out of smart energy systems in Europe and the rest of the world”.
The Finseny Project, set up as part of the fight against climate change and the drive to find new energy sources, intends to develop a more efficient and secure electricity system which particularly favours the introduction of renewable energy sources to the grid. This project will be particularly important in Spain, the global wind energy leader.
In this regard, smart power grids will ensure reliability of supply and guarantee a constant balance between generation and demand by introducing advanced ICT technologies to the energy system.
The use of ICTS in energy supply infrastructures will allow companies real time demand response and load control. This system will also aid, for instance, electric vehicle recharging and offer savings schemes for homes and commercial buildings.
The Finseny Project also recognises that Internet is now the main communication tool between people and that in the future it will be key to making people’s lives easier. By bringing Internet and smart grids together, users will be able to manage their power usage easily.
Iberdrola, which boasts smart grid projects in Valencia, the Basque Country and Murcia, has successfully rolled out the first stage of this initiative in Castellón, installing 100,000 smart meters and adapting 600 substations to include new electronic equipment that provides information on and improves their operation. The company also has initiatives in other countries: in the US, through its subsidiary Central Maine Power, and Scotland, in conjunction with ScottishPower in Glasgow.
