Wireless hands-free charging is rapidly being presented as a viable solution for autonomous taxi fleets. Since the start of the Gothenburg Green City Zone project two years ago, 20 electric Volvo XC40 taxis, using InductEV’s wireless, in-ground, on-route charging technology, have logged 7,000 charging events, 100 MWh in inductive power transfer, and 85 laps around the earth. The programme met or exceeded all expectations, including:
100 percent uptime on all charging stations
The taxi drivers found the technology convenient and easy to use
No apps, tags or credit cards were needed for payment
The inductive charging worked without fail in rain, snow, hot, cold, dirt, and icy conditions
Volvo Cars has now selected the pilot taxi programme to be showcased at World of Volvo, the new, 237,000 square foot experience centre in the center of Gothenburg.
“Volvo Cars and its hometown city of Gothenburg have been tremendous partners in putting our inductive charging technology to the test” said John Rizzo, President and CEO of InductEV. “We are glad it lived up to their expectations and honoured to have it showcased as one of the many compelling displays on the future-forward World of Volvo.”
