Where there is wind, there is rail: Spanish train network goes green

Acciona Green Energy Developments has been awarded more than 70% of the electricity supply to ADIF (the Spanish rail operator) in 2012, which represents an associated turnover of €162 million. The “renewable” electricity will power three high-speed rail lines, several key commuter links, buildings, stations and other ADIF facilitates.

Acciona Green Energy Developments, a subsidiary company of the Acciona Group that manages and markets power, has been awarded 11 of the 17 lots distributed by the Board of Directors of Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias (ADIF) for the supply of electricity to the publicly-owned Spanish railway infrastructure operator in 2012. These lots represent an estimated energy consumption of 2,114.8 million kilowatt-hours, with an associated turnover of €162 million.

Acciona Green Energy Developments has been allocated 71% of the total energy put out to tender. The 11 lots correspond to three AVE high-speed rail links: Madrid-Barcelona, Madrid-Seville and Madrid-Valladolid, i.e. all those tendered for except the AVE line between Madrid and Valencia; the Madrid-North, Madrid-South, Barcelona-North and Barcelona-South commuter lines; the lines between Ávila-Galicia-Asturias; Medina-Basque Country, and Alcázar de San Juan-Andalusia; plus supplies to buildings, stations and other ADIF facilities.

All the power supplied by Acciona Green Energy Developments will be certified as of renewable origin by the CNE (Spanish National Energy Commission), and the certification will come from the green energy power plants that the company manages in Spain (with a capacity of over 6,000 MW).

Acciona Green Energy Developments manages the sale of electricity produced by generating plants of the Acciona Group, and power produced by other special regime producers in Spain. It markets green electricity with a guarantee of renewable origin and manages the Group's carbon credits portfolio.
