The HEAR program is prioritizing PUD customers at or below 80% of area median income. The PUD was awarded $5.3 million in funding for its HEAR program, the most of any utility in the state of Washington.
“These energy efficient appliances will help our most vulnerable customers reduce their energy burden and save money,” said John Hoffman, PUD Chief Customer Officer. “This program will truly empower them to take control of their energy consumption in their home, a win for them and all PUD ratepayers.”
PUD staff developed its HEAR program to distribute free ENERGY STAR-rated washers and dryers, efficient induction stovetops (and cookware) and heat pump water heaters for customers who qualify. Along with income level, customers qualified for the HEAR program based on energy burden, home ownership and other factors.
The PUD is in the process of sending nearly 500 customers instructions on how to participate in the program and select their energy-efficient appliance of choice. Customers who chose to receive laundry or stovetop appliances will be able to visit local Albert Lee or Judd & Black locations to select their new appliance from a qualified product list. Customers who opted to receive a new heat pump water heater will contact a qualified PUD Trade Ally contractor to receive their free appliance.
The PUD will continue to send invitations to qualifying customers as funds allow. All funds must be distributed by June 2025.
