Greensmith Energy won the award in conjunction with AltaGas, a leading North American diversified energy infrastructure company. The awards were officially received at Greentech Media’s Grid Edge World Forum 2017, being held in San Jose, California, and due to end today. The two companies designed, integrated and commissioned the Pomona Energy Storage system in under four months and on budget, achieving one of the fastest deployments of any grid-scale energy storage system globally. the facility runs on Greensmith’s GEMS software platform, provides 20 MW and 80 MWh of energy capacity to Southern California Edison and is the largest indoor battery facility in the world.
“We are delighted by this special recognition for a state-of-the-art energy storage system that quickly addressed a serious capacity issue in California associated with the Aliso Canyon gas leak” said Greensmith CEO John Jung. “Greensmith’s growing track record of successful system deliveries, now over 60 globally, demonstrates that advanced grid-scale energy storage can be deployed in a matter of months and is capable of responding in milliseconds to improve grid quality anywhere.”
Greensmith Energy and AltaGas were selected from hundreds of Grid Edge Award nominations. Winners represent the top twenty companies or projects showcasing innovative products, new business models for the electric sector, and efficient, reliable alternatives for managing the electric grid.
Earlier this month, Energy Storage North America also recognised Greensmith and AltaGas as a finalist for a 2017 Innovation Award. A public vote to determine ESNA award winners is underway and the winner will be announced in August.
Energy solutions and services company Wärtsilä, which operates in 70 countries, is currently engaged in proceedings to acquire Greensmith Energy. This process will be concluded in July 2017.
Greensmith’s GEMS software platform optimises the performance of energy storage by lowering costs and maximizing system return on investment. The company designs and deploys advanced energy storage systems, including grid-scale and behind-the-meter and microgrid solutions.
