gridX's smart energy management solution combines its Xenon cloud platform and the gridBox IoT gateway. The redesign of the gridBox was also intended to significantly accelerate the in-house production of the gateway. The new plastic housing of the gridBox will now be produced by a plastics manufacturer from North Rhine-Westphalia.
By updating the housing and switching to a regional supplier, gridX is shortening its supply chain and increasing the efficiency of its gridBox production. The increased production performance is largely due to the reduction in the number of small individual parts. The new housing allows the gateway to be assembled much more quickly thanks to a plug-in system, as there is no longer any need for complex screw connections for the cover and base.
For gridX, this increased efficiency in production lays an important foundation for its current scaling phase, as it is expected to enable a significant increase in annual production numbers. As a result, gridX's hardware production not only becomes more agile, but the company also takes a greater step towards its ambitious growth targets set by the management.
“The gridBox facelift not only allows gridX to scale” said Tim Steinmetz, Managing Director and Chief Growth Officer at gridX. “Our partners will also be able to ramp up their business with smart energy management solutions even more in the future and optimally serve the ever-increasing demand from the HEMS and e-mobility sectors.”
Besides increasing efficiency in production, sustainability factors also played a major role in the strategic decision to modernize the gridBox.
On the one hand, the manufacturing process of the gridBox housing is now considerably more material-efficient than it was previously. Plastic waste generated during production can be immediately recycled and directly reused.
In addition, the manufacturer, like gridX, attaches great importance to a sustainable supply chain. On top of sustainability certifications for manufacturing processes, the supplier also prioritizes resource-efficient processes that minimize waste. Last but not least, the choice of a regional partner also plays a significant role: the proximity of the new supplier to gridX's Aachen production facility also means shorter distances for delivering the housings – another positive influence on the IoT gateway's carbon footprint.
