The agreement to sell HS Orka to Magma Energy Corp. was approved by a parliamentary oversight committee last year, and has since been mired in controversy.
Bjork, who has long mixed political activism with her musical career, believes that Icelanders should have a say in regard to whether access to the country’s natural resources should be privatised.
The singer presented the petition to Sigurdardottir on Monday accompanied by between 70 to 80 protesters, according to a report by Reuters.
Iceland’s Morgunbladid newspaper later reported that as many as 47,000 of Iceland’s 319,000 residents had signed the petition, expressing their dissatisfaction with the deal.
Afterward, Bjork told waiting reporters, “basically we are in agreement on the issue, but it's always a question of methods”.
“In plain language, it's a question of how to deal with the system, the bureaucracy,” she said.
Alison Thompson, a spokeswoman for Magma responded by saying the transactions have been reviewed several times”.
“They have all come back to be legally binding and appropriate,” she said.
