The pipeline network is essential to unlocking the benefits and ambitions of the HyNet North West scheme and achieving the UK's target of reaching net zero.
It would connect industrial offtakers and power generators to a supply of low carbon hydrogen, helping cut down greenhouse gas emissions. This would support industry particularly in 'hard to electrify' sectors and supports the UK's ambition for 10 GW low carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030.
Cadent held eight in-person events along the route, as well as two online events where people could learn more about the proposals, meet the team and ask questions about the project. Around 650 people attended the events in total.
Feedback received includes comments on construction methods, temporary access routes and suggestions for adjustments to the route of the pipeline. Cadent is grateful to those who have provided feedback about the local area and is considering this feedback as plans are developed further.
The next steps are to review all feedback submitted during the consultation, alongside further technical and environmental work. This will help to finalize the design of the project and will form part of a final Consultation Report summarizing people's responses to this and previous consultations. It will also explain how people's views have been considered.
This stage of consultation is likely to be the last project-wide consultation on the proposals. Once the final plans have been developed, an application for development consent will be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate and Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. We expect to submit our Development Consent Order application in Spring 2025.
“We are grateful for the feedback we have received throughout this latest statutory consultation, and to the members of the local community who took the time to attend our events” said Rob Donovan, Project Director, Cadent's HyNet North West Hydrogen Pipeline. “We will now look at all the information we have been given, including people's comments on our design, to finalize our project ahead of submitting our Development Consent Order application.”
