The Repsol-led consortium has chosen Sunfire's established pressurised alkaline technology. In summer 2024, Sunfire secured a significant order from RWE utilising this technology. With the Spanish electrolysis project, Sunfire successfully is continuing its momentum, solidifying its role as a preferred partner for globally operating energy companies.
The plant is scheduled to go into operation in 2026. The 10 MW plant can produce up to 200 kilograms of green hydrogen per hour using electricity from renewable sources. Repsol will then use this hydrogen to produce synthetic fuels (e-fuels). E-fuels are seen as a potential solution for decarbonising sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as aviation and heavy transportation.
“Sunfire is an established partner for the realisation of green hydrogen projects and plays a key role in the decarbonization of the industry” said Nils Aldag, CEO of Sunfire. “We are excited to have gained with Repsol another global energy company as partner. Spain is a very exciting market for us! The country offers strong conditions for green hydrogen projects with its geographic location and industrial expertise.”
Spain is emerging as a leading location for the production of green hydrogen, the Spanish government having recently increased its target for green hydrogen production capacity as part of its updated energy plan.
Bilbao is also considered a key location in the Basque Country-region, where numerous companies and research centers are working on hydrogen projects. For Repsol, the Spanish port city is a crucial hub in its commitment to decarbonisation, aiming to achieve the goal of zero net emissions by 2050.
