Babcock & Wilcox have announced that its Danish subsidiary, Babcock & Wilcox Vølund A/S (B&W Vølund), will partner with Interserve PLC to build a new waste-to-energy plant in Peterborough for waste management company Viridor. Primarily the plant will be used for Combined Heat & Power (CHP) purposes but will also be capable of providing steam for future district heating schemes.
B&W Vølund will manufacture the plant’s electromechanical supplies including its combustion system, fuel grate, boiler, environmental control, turbine and generator. Interserve will meanwhile provide construction and project management services.
“B&W Vølund is well-positioned to capitalize on the anticipated growth of the waste-to-energy market in the U.K., as municipalities seek to comply with emissions regulations and reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills” said J. Randall Data, Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group President and Chief Operating Officer. “We're appreciative of Viridor's decision to select B&W Vølund and Interserve for this project.”
Engineering for the project is already underway and the official opening is scheduled for October 2015. B&W are based in Charlotte, North Carolina but have offices across the globe employing around 12,700 people. Babcock & Wilcox Vølund specialise in waste incineration and biomass particularly with regard to development, design, construction and commissioning
