Industrial heat pumps have widespread support from EU countries

A new report from the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) has revealed that nearly all European countries offer financial subsidies or support for companies who want to invest in an industrial size heat pump.

A total of 24 countries were surveyed – including Norway, Switzerland and the UK – in which help is available for industrial heat pump installation, whether that be in the form of a grant, loan or tax rebate.

Such large heat pumps – which can reach up to 200°C - are being increasingly successfully used in industries from paper and pump, to dairy, to textiles and wood, as shown in EHPA’s collection of case studies. They are a key means of decarbonising Europe’s industry. 60 percent of industrial energy use goes on heat, but all must be decarbonised by 2050 to meet the EU’s climate targets. However, there are still some barriers to industrial heat pump uptake which must be addressed, including lack of awareness of their potential.

“To decarbonise European industry, food processing and even offices, there is a ready and proven solution – waste heat recovery using high temperature heat pumps” said Paul Kenny, director general of the European Heat Pump Association. “These heat pumps will replace fossil fuels, save you money because of their efficiency - and get rid of a lot of emissions. They should be front and centre of the EU’s upcoming plan to help decarbonise industry in line with the net zero emissions target for 2050.”

The incoming European Commission is due to publish an ‘Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act’ to support the green transition in energy-intensive industries and the wider economy.

This week, how to speed up the roll-out of industrial heat pumps will be the focus of the conference ‘Industrial Heat Pumps - Prague’ in the Czech capital. EHPA is a strategic partner in the event.
