Following on from its first report on the technological challenges for Supergrid, which found that most of the technology necessary to develop a largescale, meshed electricity network in Europe is already available, the Friends of the Supergrid have published a second report looking at the state of the market for deployment of pan-European transmission.
The report, which presents a comprehensive analysis of the state of the cabling, cable laying and HVDC markets, finds that companies and organisations across the supply chain are putting in place investment in anticipation of future network build.
The authors of the report also highlight that “Smart Resource Project Planning” should be adopted to reduce risk and cost of deployment, and that the development and creation of the Supergrid will offer significant education, training and employment opportunities.
However, they also stress that the sector is still looking for a new or adapted regulatory framework to further support development.
Echoing their findings, Ana Aguado, CEO of the Friends of the Supergrid, says: “Supply chain preparation is in place to bring online additional capacity to deliver the network. What is needed is a clear regulatory signal to enable this investment”.
