Negative reactions to Spanish FiT freeze continue

Aftershocks from the Spanish government’s announcement last week that it is imposing a moratorium on feed-in tariffs (FiTs) for renewable energy continue to rattle around the world. We caught up with two leading FiT commentators and asked them for their views on the background behind this heavy blow to the sector and what the consequences are for clean energy and the economy as a whole.

In an attempt to clean up its image after the solar feed-in tariff cut fiasco, the UK government led by the Deputy Prime Minister and new Energy and Climate Change Secretary are making pushing to highlight that the green economy is still high on their agenda. In a statement today, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) announced that 155 community energy efficiency projects had been awarded £5.1 million in grants today.

The UN High-Level Panel for Global Sustainability has called for a radical redesign of the global economy for a healthy environment and social well-being deserves a wide audience and the full attention of all governments before this year’s Rio+20 Earth Summit.
