Brazil will generate electricity from the waves

Brazil will build a pilot plant to generate electricity using the waves force, which will become the first one in Latin America. The plant will require an initial investment of 3.5 million reals ($ 1.6m), according to Brazilian press sources The plant will be installed in Ceará's cost, Northeast of the country, and will feature 500 kW, enough to power 200 homes, according to those sources.

The project, announced by the University of Río, will be financed by the National Scientific and Technological Development Council jointly with Electrobras.

Despite the high cost per kilowatt achieved by the technology, "it would be unforgivable not to join the industry now" said Mr Mauricio Tolmasquim, General Director of the Energy Planning Entity (EPE), as energy newspaper Valor quoted.

The two first modules of the plant (out of the total 20 that have been planned) should be working before the end of 2006.

According to a report by the University of Río, the energy created by the waves could potentially represent 15% of the country's energy consumption.

Currently, hydro power represents more than 95% of the electricity being produced in Brazil, while nuclear represents 3.5%. The country is also developing wind and solar programs.
